From it nearly coming home to England this summer through to Squid Game taking over TV sets across the globe, 2021 has been an eventful year. To lay any arguments to rest, we’ve asked 2,000 Brits to vote for the best TV shows, sports events, songs, Christmas adverts and films to come out of 2021. We also decided to find out Brits’ favourite Christmas song too for good measure. So, without further ado, here are the results.

Best TV shows released in 2021

According to Brits surveyed, the five best TV shows released in 2021 are:

  1. Squid Game (21%)
  2. A Perfect Planet – David Attenborough (15%)
  3. Sex Education (12%)
  4. It’s a Sin (12%)
  5. You – Season 3 (11%)

Notably, Gen Z (37%), Millennials (27%) and Gen X (22%) surveyed picked Squid Game as their best TV show released in 2021, but Baby Boomers (21%) and Silent Gen (32%) chose A Perfect Planet – David Attenborough.

Best sporting events from 2021

Meanwhile, the five best sporting events from 2021, according to Brits are:

  1. Olympics (28%)
  2. Euros (27%)
  3. Rugby Union – Six Nations (12%)
  4. Ashes Cricket: Australia vs England (9%)
  5. London Marathon (9%)

For Gen Z (27%) and Millennials (28%) surveyed, the top sporting event from 2021 was the Euros, however, for Gen X (30%), Baby Boomers (33%) and Silent Gen (32%), the top sporting event was the Olympics.

Best songs released in 2021

When looking at the music category, the five best songs released in 2021 are:

  1. Ed Sheeran – Bad Habits (27%)
  2. Adele – Easy on Me (25%)
  3. Olivia Rodrigo- Good 4 U (10%)
  4. Justin Bieber- Peaches (10%)
  5. Olivia Rodrigo- Drivers Licence (10%)

More generational differences occur for this category. For example, Millennials (29%), Gen X (31%) and Silent Gen (22%) surveyed think Ed Sheeran – Bad Habits is the best song released in 2021. However, Baby Boomers’ top pick is Adele – Easy on me (28%) and Gen Z chose Olivia Rodrigo – Good 4 U (27%) as their best song.

Best films released in 2021

The five best films released in 2021, according to Brits are:

  1. James Bond (27%)
  2. Black Widow (16%)
  3. The Suicide Squad (16%)
  4. Godzilla vs Kong (11%)
  5. Free Guy (9%)

Millennials (26%), Gen X (32%), Baby Boomers (30%) and Silent Gen (20%) all chose James Bond as their best film released in 2021, however, Gen Z chose The Suicide Squad (30%).

Best Christmas adverts released in 2021

Although the John Lewis adverts were arguably the most anticipated Christmas adverts for years, it seems the tide has turned with Aldi very closely pipping John Lewis to the top spot. According to Brits surveyed this year, the five best Christmas adverts released in 2021 are:

  1. Aldi (20%)
  2. John Lewis (19%)
  3. M&S (15%)
  4. McDonald’s (13%)
  5. Tesco (12%)

John Lewis is, however, the top pick for Gen Z (18%) and Millennials (17%) surveyed. Gen X (23%) and Baby Boomers (27%) chose Aldi as their best Christmas advert released in 2021, while the Silent Gen (27%) chose M&S.

Best Christmas song

Finally, the topic has been debated for years. But, according to Brits surveyed recently, the top ten best Christmas songs are:

  1. Fairytale of New York – Kirsty MacColl (24%)
  2. Last Christmas – Wham (18%)
  3. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday- Wizzard (16%)
  4. Merry Xmas Everybody – Slade (15%)
  5. All I Want for Christmas is You – Mariah Carey (15%)
  6. Driving Home For Christmas – Chris Rea (13%)
  7. Do They Know It’s Christmas? – Band Aid (13%)
  8. White Christmas – Bing Crosby (12%)
  9. It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas – Michael Buble (11%)
  10. It’s The Most Wonderful Time of The Year – Andy Williams (9%)

Once again, the generations are divided. Millennials (18%), Gen X (29%) and Baby Boomers (32%) surveyed think the best Christmas song is Fairytale of New York. However, the Silent Gen chose White Christmas – Bing Crosby (27%) and Gen Z think It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas by Michael Buble is the best Christmas song (16%).
